Question: Hi, I am a frequent user of the Phase 1,2,3 Headstart vitamin programme which I have found to be very beneficial to the growth of my hair especially since having my son. It got very weak for a while after the birth. Reason I am writing to you is to ask the question if this course if safe to take during pregnancy or do you have any information to support that it might be ok. Most likely I would start again once the baby is born but then this poses the question as to whether it is safe during breastfeeding. Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Linda Answer: Linda - Most women find that using Head Start ® both during and following pregnancy is beneficial due to the fact that the hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause moderate to severe hair-loss as the fetus tends to use more of the mother's dietary nutrients and deprive her of those nutritional benefits. Additionally, during breastfeeding an inordinate amount of nutrients are shuttled by your body to the baby through breastmilk, often leaving the new mother lacking for her own needs. Head Start ® contains not only folic acid (folacin), but other vitamins, minerals and amino-acids necessary to the healthy development of your child in the womb. Many physicians find it a comfortable adjunct to pre-natal supplements or a useful substitute, based on specific nutritional needs of the individual patient. We would recommend you ask your physician about continuing the products during pregnancy and breastfeeding as that is the best source of medical advice for your own individual condition and that of your child, since it should be considered in relation to other supplements you may be taking and what your pediatrician feels is best for the baby as well as for you. Most physicians feel that post-partum supplementation is beneficial to the health of the mother, but you should check with your own doctor for personal medical guidance. Thank you for using Head Start ® Vitamin Products Question: I have been taking your product for about 2 months or so now. I have begun to notice some good changes. When I went in for my yearly physical recently, my blood work came out showing that my thyroid was really out of whack again. It had been under control for some time. My doctor wasn't sure what had changed. I didn't think much about it, and I did tell her that I was taking these vitamins for hair loss, but she seemed to think they were okay. She doubled my thyroid medication, and I have to have it re-checked in 6 weeks. A few days later I was reading a natural remedy book that my mother-in-law had I saw that when you are taking thyroid medication that you cannot take any vitamins with iron until at least four hours after the thyroid med. Previous to the Head Start Program, I had been taking Centrum Silver every day. I stopped taking the Centrum Silver when I started your regime. In going over the ingredients in your Head Start Vitamins, I noticed that there is Iron in there. If you take thyroid meds, it says you shouldn't consume any vitamins with Iron for at least four hours afterwards so I switched back to my Centrum Silver. Since I need to take my thyroid in the AM, I can't take the Vitamins and Protein in the AM. I thought I could switch to taking the Nutrition tablets in the morning instead of the Vitamins, but I see the Nutrition also has iron in it. The Nutrition is not a problem because I take that at the evening meal. My question is will taking only your Protein tablet in the morning and your Nutrition tablet in the evening work as well as taking all three of these tablets. I would just replace the Head Start Vitamins with Centrum Silver in the morning when I take the Protein tablets. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts and answers on this problem. Thanks, Cathy Answer: Cathy - We have found that following your doctor's advice is always the best in these situations. If you take the prescription medication in the morning, as you describe, we advise you take your AM dosage of Head Start ® VITAMINS and PROTEIN at lunchtime (about 4-5 hours later) and then take the PM dose of NUTRiTiON with your evening meal or at bedtime. Our iron content in the VITAMINS is very low, just 22% (4mg) of your Minimum Daily Requirement in the VITAMINS and 11% (2mg) in the NUTRiTiON. In any event, our supplementation of iron is just 33% of your MDR and should not be a cause of concern. Check with your Doctor on your next office visit to be sure; and take along the original box where complete ingredients are listed for all three Phases. Taking Head Start ® as described above should fit in with the thyroid regimen you have indicated is preferred, and will give you the same benefit you have enjoyed, without the need for Centrum and without interfering with the thyroid medication. Nothing wrong with Centrum, of course, but it does not utilize Niacin (vitamin B3) to increase the blood supply to your hair follicles as our Phase 1 & Phase 3 tablets do. This is one of the reasons other OTC multivitamin products do not have the direct beneficial effect on hair growth that you enjoy from Head Start ® Alternatively, many people have told us they take all three of our tablets in the evening, as it seems to work best for them individually. This can be done, but you may find the lunch and dinner approach more beneficial as it spreads the nutrients out over a longer period of time, allowing availability to your metabolism on a more regular basis. The question is: should I take one each of the 3 pills in the morning and same at night before I go to bed, will improve? Thanks Agnes Answer: Agnes: Many of our customers report their success with using one of each Phase in the morning and one of each Phase at night. They say it works better and that their hair grows back in faster. The only advice we give in this regard is that you should not exceed 10,000IU of vitamin A per day since it is fat soluble and will build up in your system. Our Phase 1 VITAMINS contain just 5,000IU per tablet, so taking two each day is fine. While vitamin A is necessary for healthy hair growth, too much can have the opposite effect and actually slow the development of new hair shafts. This is something which would normally occur in excess of 25,000IU daily, but in an abundance of caution we recommend no more than 10,000IU daily. If you are taking a regular daily multi-vitamin, we advise you to stop as you receive most of what you need in the three Head Start ® formulae, especially when taken twice daily. If you are taking vitamin E or vitamin C separately, that is OK as they are not duplicated in the Head Start ® Nutritional HairCare System. Reason being is that I find it difficult to swallow a large pill of any kind especially ones that are not coated. My other question is how come these vitamins are not in capsule form? I read where it's better to have a vitamin in capsule form versus pill form because they are never really totally digested by your system. In fact they have shown X-rays where the ones not in capsules are still whole in your stomach. Or is this just another type of fraud regarding a way to sell their vitamins to you. I took them for over a week and then broke out into a rash all over my body from head to toe with severe itching. I discontinued use, but I read on this web site about niacin rush. Does that occur like this or is this something different? the rash lasted for about 45 minutes to an hour and itched a couple days. Also, if you take the tablets alone without food or milk to cushion the effect when the tablets dissolve, the peripheral vasodilation can be more noticeable, which may be what happened in this instance since you had used them for a week without the rash and itching you describe. It could be you are reacting to something in the tablets, or to something else in your diet. Niacin rush is normally seen within ten to fifteen minutes and normally fades away after a half-hour or so. You will find it described in the literature which is packed in each package as well as on our website. If you mail us the bottles you purchased, we will have the lot numbers examined to see if there have been any other reports of excessive reaction to the same production batches. Paul Answer: The aluminum noted is a trace (almost unmeasurable) amount found as a natural component of brewer's (primary dried) yeast, which we use as a source of essential and non-essential amino-acids to assist in cellular growth and development. It is a non-toxic amount and is the same as is found in brewer's yeast used in bread or beer, among many other dietary sources. The amount of this trace mineral varies depending on the soil used to grow the grains used in the production of yeast. The protein tablet contains about as much aluminum as it does gold or silver, which amount is negligible. Measurable amounts of aluminum are normally found in antacids such as Di-Gel, Gaviscon, Gelusil, Maalox, Mylanta, Wingel etc, and in consumer products such as astringents, buffered aspirin, food additives, and antiperspirants. The aluminum content of one adult dose of Maalox, for example, is 440-880mg. Most people ingest 5-10mg daily of aluminum from normal dietary sources. Any quantity of aluminum in our tablets could only be measured in ppm (parts per million). In response to your inquiry, we are having the raw material tested to determine the exact amount of trace aluminum present, if any.
